Gonzales vows to cling to post, confidence or not.»

Faced with calls for his resignation and a looming no-confidence vote, Alberto Gonzales today vowed he will remain attorney general through the end of President Bush’s second term. “I know that I only have 18 months left in my term as attorney general,” he said in a speech to law enforcement officials, promising to “sprint to the finish line” to “accomplish all the goals that are important to me.” Watch it:

CNN notes, “News reporters were carefully kept away from the attorney general so he could not be questioned.”

“accomplish all the goals that are important to me.”

Too bad he doesn’t want to accomplish anything for the country!

  4. Prissy Says:

Gonzo you forgot to say “psyche”…disbar and impeach!

  5. Pickles Says:

So, how much more damage can he do to the rule of law in 18 months? Guess we’ll find out.

Goddamnit, I’m getting so sick of this shit.

  6. katy Says:

a caller to rachel maddow’s show - david bender is subbing today -
just reported seeing gonzo getting out of a car in texas [recently]…
visiting his old law firm? … looking for his old job?…
    could be breaking news…

  7. mr. mario Says:

It’s kind of like Bush saying that he is gonna make it so that the US HAS to stay in Iraq because it is the US’s destiny.

This guy is probably staying long enough so that the changes made to the Justice Department are so substantial that they will be irreversible.

I think they (the admin) know that Democrats are too spineless to stop them and the Republicans could care less.

  8. labs Says:

for a neocon it doesn’t pay enough to do anything FOR the country…now TO the country is different.

gonzo, however, isn’t smart enough for either…it takes a special sort of stupid to be this cabal’s favorite dupe.

  9. CarolSoprano Says:

Screw him - impeach his ass out of there! Who the hell does he think he is? The man is a complete and utter moron who is so self-absorbed and egocentric he doesn’t realize the damage he’s doing to the DOJ and to the judicial system in general. God, he’s unbelievable. I so hope that the ABA disbars his sorry ass - he’s an absolute embarrassment.

  10. Candyce Says:

Delusional, and selfish. Just like his boss.

  11. djangone Says:

I’m curious what the right answer is. We raked Bush over the coals for saying he made no mistakes, and we rake Bartlett over the coals for saying there were a lot of mistakes. Is the right answer something like, 12? A few?

  12. spencers mom Says:

OOOH! Better keep those bad ol’ reporters away! They might ask questions!

Just like his BFF bush, can’t be around people who might ask tough questions.

What a bunch of limp-dicked wimps.

    PEACE

A speech to law enforcement officials, and not a one of them arrested his ass?
    Geez. how disappointing.

  15. Bob Says:

He’s only got 18 months to fully incorporate the Justice Department into the Republican party.

  18. Yup Says:

I wouldn’t be worried if I was Gonzalez, either. The democratic party doesn’t know the meaning of the word “impeachment”. They are timid unto cowardice.

  19. profmarcus Says:

good, al… just fine, in fact… stick around as long as you like… the longer you do, the more damage your presence will do to your boss and the more likely the entire house of cards will fall before 20 january 2009… please… be my guest…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  20. smafdy Says:

Boorish behavior in the extreme. He’s been invited to leave, but has decided he can save face if he ignores the invitation. Time to give him the bum’s rush.

  21. VerbalKint Says:

Send this crook to prison already. Gonzales is a no-class dirtbag, even by the standards of criminals.

  26. mongo Says:

“to accomplish all the goals that are important to me.”

How about the goals that are important to the American people as reflected in their representatives, the congress? Such as demanding a new attorney general?

  27. theswan Says:

“to accomplish all the goals important to me.” And fu.k the American People and their American Justice”. I and my slant comes first and formost. I am the athorney general.

His message is “me” and the rest of you go f..k yourself.

Hopefully, the Democrats can improve on this mentality.

  28. Bluedog49 Says:

Wow, he’s not only incompetent, but totally without honor and self-respect as well. That’s the trifecta!

  29. futureStar Says:

Gonzales is a comic book character in a fantasy, comic book situation.
The fact that he now places some new found importance on certain,
cherry picked endeavors gains him no legitimacy, respect, power, or
place in history. Joke is on him. He’ll never get and we can change things back after he’s gone. What an unprecedented waste of vital resources by Bush and company. They have no shame, no inner moral compass, or a care to any other person in the world.

  30. Gerald Gibson Says:

If Bush and Cheney dont pay it will be because of this guy. Replace this guy and they risk getting a republican that considers the law above all else even if he is a christianist.

  31. theswan Says:

He may leave when the Law Profession and The People speak up.

  32. skeptik Says:

maybe he’s hoping he call pull a “wolfowitz” - finagle some kind of face-saving deal in exchange for resigning?

or maybe he thinks he can install a few more partisan AG’s or judges if he hangs in there.

  33. KRank Says:

Wow, he’s not only incompetent, but totally without honor and self-respect as well. That’s the trifecta!

    Comment by Bluedog49 — June 1, 2007 @ 7:35 pm

    But of course — he’s Cabinet-level.

I think if you’ve only got two-out-of-three, the best you can do is “senior official”.

  34. USA Says:

AAAaa ha ha ha! That’s a cute dream PSYCHOPATHIC PERSONALITY DISORDER! It’s obviously a dream since you keep the reporters away and have to cower from the public and rational people, F***ing SICKO!

  35. dixie blood Says:

This little a$$wipe is part of an impending internal coup and is sticking in there to make sure it happens. If he leaves the coup will fail!!!!

AG the AG is an enemy of the state and the people and MUST BE IMPEACHED, DISBARRED and CHARGED WITH WAR CRIMES AT THE HAGUE!!

  36. Pickles Says:

One of his stated goals was something to the effect of cracking down on child molesters. Ain’t that f’in rich. There’s this Mark Foley guy still out and around and no one, particularly Abu, seems to give a sh!t.

The guy blames it all on the booze, checks into rehab, adopts Jaysus as his personal savior, and everything is apparently forgiven. I doubt that would work for folks like you and me.

  37. dixie blood Says:

A speech to law enforcement officials, and not a one of them arrested his ass?

    Comment by RUCerious — June 1, 2007 @ 7:00 pm

Sad, but most law enforcement officers in this country are Repugniscums…and christianistas…and moron, high school bullies that couldn’t fit in elsewhere!!

  38. dixie blood Says:

    Comment by upside00 — June 1, 2007 @ 7:01 pm

Too late. GW Botch took care of that sh!t from his history while fakin’ it as a ‘real’ governor!! He had all of his alcohol and cocaine crap removed from the public record!!

  41. Keith H. Says:

Dude would follow Georgie straight into the bowels of hell.

Going down in flames with his ‘Decider’, his ‘Commander Guy’.

    Loyal to the bitter end.

  42. Tenebrae Says:

Yeah, Gonzo’ll “accomplish all the goals that are important to him” — covering Bush’s sorry ass.

  43. CaptainMantastic Says:

If someone in the Bush administration leaves, for whatever reason, it signals the disintegration of the administration. If someone in the administration stays, it signals the continued moral decay of the administration. You progressives have very convenient logic.

  44. Jay Says:

If this no-confidence vote takes six months to happen and won’t change anything, what the f*ck is the point?

Let’s have a no-confidence vote on Bush/Cheney. Jayzus, Congress-people, please get off your asses.

  45. justice Says:

they have to get him out and soon. This scumbag goes, we can access the documents we need and they will all go down. That is the only reason he is still there. He has to be IMPEACHED NOW

  46. joe Says:

    Woo-hoo!

    Stay, Gonzo, stay!

    Four more investigations!

    What’s Spanish for pinata?

  47. justice Says:

no the no confidence vote is mid June. Look for more action on follow up testimony due to Goodlings testimony in June too.

He’s goin’ down. It takes time and these scum are doing ALL they can to try to stonewall, hide evidence withhold evidence and monkey wrench oversight at each and every turn. But lying is hard, even for an attorney, to keep track of and he PERJURED himself and there is evidence of witness tampering and obstruction of justice to “look in to”
it will be a mighty interesting summer..

he is goin’ down, if he had ANY decency he’d leave NOW.

  48. Jay Randal Says:

Gonzales does nothing for average Americans, so he needs to cut the crap and resign > PERIOD.

  49. Maeven Says:

This is all the fault of Republican representatives and senators. By refusing to demand Bush fire Gonzales and/or impeach Gonzales and/or impeach Bush-Cheney, Republicans are enabling the further destruction of government, DoJ, lives of U.S. servicemen and women, innocent civilians in Iraq, America’s good name.

We need to stop looking at Bush, Cheney and members of their administration as anything but what they are: CRIMINALS.

The country, the world, can’t take another 18 months of this.

  50. djangone Says:

Oops, wrong thread on my earlier comment.

  51. Marie Says:

He needs the support of one man at this point, and he has it.
He can be impeached. He can be disbarred.
He should be brought to trial.

  52. justice Says:

    captnboytastic

you are right. there are time one should NOT QUIT. One of them is when you have a criminal cabal capable of even TREASON in the White House. That’s a good time to stay the course.

Staying the course when that course is ONLY to protect your own and other’s criminal activity is NOT.

but you would know that if you had any morals.

Im positive the REALITY based community would aggressively pursue a Democrat who did this in the same way.
But history shows us that its REPUBLICANS who are criminals and it’s REPUBLICANS that run up debt into the stratosphere.
The only people who don’t know that are the 28%ers like you

  53. Zooey Says:

Keep hanging on Gonzo! It’s for the good of the presidency!

  54. demgrrrl Says:

Gonzo’s staying in office has nothing to do with Gonzo, except that he’s one of Bush’s closest buddies, and Bush won’t let him be run out of office by the congress - either dem’s and repub’s. Bush is stubborn and refuses to be “bossed around” by congress or let one of his buddies be bossed around. Bush takes dumping on his pal as a personal affront.

  55. RUCerious Says:

For the chymp to remove him would be to admit he’d made a mistake, and as we all know, he’s King Kong, who never makes ( or at least admits making) a mistake.
Somebody put a pretzel in a banana for him!

  56. Jay Randal Says:

demgrrrl > Bush needs Gonzales as a firewall to protect the regime in the Justice Department, but if Alberto becomes a liability to Bush then he will throw Gonzo under the bus pronto.

  57. Paul in LA Says:

Having said this, he will be ‘leaving to spend more time with his family’ within two months.

    Under indictment.

  58. me Says:

    Impeach him!

  59. Alberto Gonzales Says:

Please impeach me, let me go,
For I can’t con you any more.

To let me stay would bring more hell,
So impeach me, and lock me in a cell.

  60. Perry Logan Says:

Neocons are as hard to get rid of as tapeworms.

  61. jojo Says:

LONG ENOUGH FOR USA TO BE A STATE OF MEXICO. HOWEVER, BETTER THAN STATE OF ISRAEL

  62. Devil's Advocate Says:

Hey, Gonzo the Bozo, you know, don’t you, that Congress can impeach you? Or is it that you can’t remember reading it in your law books?

  63. 1person Says:

HOW DARE HE? HOW DARE HE? How much longer can we stay silent? REPUDIATE, REPUDIATE, REPUDIATE… Gonzales and ALL of this Constitution trashing administration… and EVERYTHING they stand for. In all our local communities, find ways to REPUDIATE this horrible regime.

  64. SKdeA Says:

    Repudiate? How about, convict?

  65. kasinca Says:

Gonzo, Karem Hughes, KKKarl Rove, and Dan Bartlett, not only know where the bodies, of the crime family are buried, they helped dig the graves. Gonzo thinks he can skate because the commander guy will protect him but the rats are jumping ship since Greg Palast made available the missing emails about voter caging.

  66. dadeo11 Says:

It’s a lack of action within the system to address these horrible offenders of our system like Gonzo, Rove, (insert Bushite here) that makes the founding fathers of this country roll over in their graves - spin cycle style.

  67. blue Says:

This guy has no respect for the American people. sick!
