Although special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has yet to lay out the facts in the CIA leak probe, the right-wing has already begun engaging in a spin campaign to deflect blame away from the White House.
Think Progress has put together a fact sheet debunking the right-wing myths about the leak investigation. It contains everything you need to fight back against the right’s misinformation campaign.
Here’s what The Note has to say about it:
As part of its broader mission of holding the “brain-dead media” accountable, the American Progress Action Fund, the C4 arm of the Center for American Progress, is launching a Web site today designed to prebut what the group considers “right-wing myths” about the Fitzgerald investigation. LINK
The folks who created it want you to think of it as a handy-dandy guide for the Gang of 500.
When conservative “yappers” say things like “leaking classified information is no big deal” because that kind of thing happens all the time in Washington, the Web site directs readers to text — and video — of Bush 41 saying on April 26, 1999 that exposing an undercover CIA agent is “the most insidious of crimes.”
Or, if someone tries to paint Fitzgerald as a “runaway prosecutor,” the folks at the C4 arm of John Podesta’s shop want you to remember that Bush 43 said Fitzgerald was conducting a “very dignified investigation” as recently as October 11, 2005.
Check it out for yourself.

This is an excellent job by all!
Sorry wingnuts!
October 19th, 2005 at 10:37 amBravo. And on the claim about perjury being just a technicality, maybe they should remember back to why the republican controlled House impeached Clinton.
October 19th, 2005 at 10:46 amThe wingnuts are angry because their boy got caught. Great job, TP.
October 19th, 2005 at 11:11 amThanks.
FYI, a longer debunking list is here:

October 19th, 2005 at 11:19 amQuestion:
Who does Fitzgerald report to? I know the request was made to the DoJ, but does this mean Gonzalez is overseeing it? I know Fitzgerald is consulting with at least one Federal judge. How can Gonzalez be in charge of investigating his own office(s)?
October 19th, 2005 at 11:19 amSo, who is going to forward this to Matthews/Hannity/Limbaugh (as if they’d care)so they’ll have a place to reference the crap they put out on the air? Cause they for sure do NOT source anything they say OR care whether it does anything to inform the debate!
October 19th, 2005 at 11:24 amSpeaking of the dishonest talking heads on TV and radio, did anyone else catch Hardball last night? I once believed that David Gergen was an honest, fairly decent guy…..oh baby how he has proven me wrong. He was defending Cheney with vigor last night and claiming that he see’s no crime that’s been committed here. These guys really do think we’re all so damned stupid. Gergen, WE ALREADY KNOW THAT THEY LIED US TO WAR and they punished and squlched dissent. The cat’s out of the bag, stop pretending everything is A-ok. You lying, slimeball hack!
October 19th, 2005 at 11:30 amSounds to me like there is a lot of nervous, cry baby repugs. in dumbya’s criminal and corrupt administration and shaking scared of being indicted for being traitors to the U.S.
October 19th, 2005 at 11:32 amNice work. Thanks for keeping everyone honest because the MSM is now a joke.

They do it anymore they get the truth in the inbox, proto.
October 19th, 2005 at 11:38 amIf Bush and Cheney are indicted Tom Flocco should get the credit for reporting it first.

A Chicago grand jury has indicted the President and Vice-President of the United States along with multiple high officials in the Bush administration
BUSH AND CHENEY INDICTED
by Tom Flocco
Chicago — August 2, 2005 — TomFlocco.com — U.S. federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald’s Chicago grand jury has voted perjury and obstruction of justice indictments to the following members of the Bush Administration: President George W. Bush, Vice-President Richard Cheney, Bush Chief of Staff Andrew Card, Cheney Chief of Staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, former Attorney General John Ashcroft, imprisoned New York Times reporter Judith Miller and former Senior Cheney advisor Mary Matalin.
There were no indications given as to whether the President and his top staff members would appear publicly before cameras at the grand jury proceedings, given the gravity of the charges.
October 19th, 2005 at 11:39 amThis journalist/activist has nailed the whole affair from its roots to scope and the Judy Miller tie-in. A must read - http://catciao.blogspot.com/2005/10/real-deal.html

New on EWM: Fitzgerald Issues Frog-Marching Guidelines
October 19th, 2005 at 11:53 amTom,
You’re hilarious!
October 19th, 2005 at 11:54 amBesides the Valerie Plame CIA leak case, the Fitzgerald probe is reportedly far-reaching and expanding much deeper into past White House criminal acts involving Bush-Clinton drug money laundering in Mena, Arkansas to White House involvement in 9.11; but also for sending America’s young people to their deaths or to be maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan under false pretenses.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair was indicted for obstruction of justice and is reportedly consulting with members of Parliament and legal aides regarding how to avoid appearing in the U.S.A. for interrogation before Fitzgerald in Chicago.
Please flog your flaccid Tom Flocco bullshit elsewhere, you dweeb.
October 19th, 2005 at 11:57 amhere’s something to add to your list of good backgrounding items… there’s a diary on kos that posts a stratfor emailing containing superb and solid information about precisely what non-official cover (noc) means in the cia context and why it is both blatantly illegal and grossly unethical to reveal the identity of an noc agent… it also contains a speculation about what might have been a justification for revealing plame’s identify…
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/10/18/51459/246
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/10/18/51459/246
October 19th, 2005 at 12:02 pmTechnically, Bush cannot be indicted as he is a sitting president. Cheney, however, can be. Bush would have to be impeached or indicted once his term is over.
October 19th, 2005 at 12:06 pmCLAIM – PERJURY AND OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE ARE “TECHNICALITIESâ€
Clinton was impeached on December 19, 1998 by the House of Representatives on grounds of perjury to a grand jury (by a 228-206 vote) and obstruction of justice (by a 221-212 vote)
That about says it all.
October 19th, 2005 at 12:32 pmHas anyone seen this?
*****
If Fitzgerald has unredacted forged Niger documents and they name Michael Ledeen and two CIA agents, then there’s more evidence that the entire rationale for war in Iraq was contrived by the administration. In other words, the Bush administration committed fraud on Congress and the American people.
October 19th, 2005 at 12:36 pm#26 And that is why they are running scared right now. Fitzgerald could be targeting ANYONE in the administration, as most had knowledge of this affair, and the exact focus is still unclear: the leaking of an undercover agent’s identity may just be the tip of the iceberg. The less that they say the better for them becuase they could misspeak and incriminate those who should be accountable but have no obvious trail. No one knows exactly WHO he’s after yet, or why. This scares them because they are so deep in corruption and lies it is sickening. In fact, they are so deep in that their lies twist back around on themselves: Rove failed to correlate ALL the spin. Being completely reactive, and not proactive, they got themselves in a bind with the deception and coverups. All it will take is a few threads… and one or two “in the know” cracking under the pressure and spilling the beans on the whole conspiracy (as someone in another post pointed out: just because something is being labled by some as a conspiracy does not mean that there is not a conspiracy. The concept is not a piece of fiction just for the entertainment industry. Gee, whiz… you mean that kind of thing really does happen? Yes, it does).
October 19th, 2005 at 12:56 pmWhy does outing Plame discredit Wilson?
I’ve read alot about this scandal, but I just dont understand this aspect of it. Can somebody enlighten me?
October 19th, 2005 at 1:23 pm#28, outing Plame by saying “he only got the job because his wife shilled for him” was one way of undermining Wilson. The other was destroying Plame’s CIA career as a NOC agent as direct punishment to Wilson for debunking the yellowcake in the 2003 SOTU.
October 19th, 2005 at 1:30 pmLeslie, you are on the case there - is anyone anywhere (besides you) asking where the forgeries came from?
October 19th, 2005 at 1:32 pmTerry,
I have heard a few of the talking heads ask that very question, including, for what its worth, Pat Buchanan.
Mike,
I think dicrediting Wilson was the secondary goal.
I’m pretty sure the reason for outing Plame was threefold. In order of importance: to intimidate other potential whistleblowers, to assassinate Wilson’s character and hurt his credibility (as mentioned above) as a source damaging to the Iraq cause, and lastly for pure revenge for “fuc*ing with them”.
October 19th, 2005 at 1:45 pmIf it’s not too much trouble, could you debunk the conclusions of the Senate Select Committee that the Weekly Standart is using as the basis for their 10/24 article? I remember reading that the CIA’s take on what Wilson did and his conclusions differ from this Senate committee’s report. Would be great to have that info here too.
October 19th, 2005 at 1:55 pmTerrytheturtle, Who’s asking who forged the Niger documents?
Josh Marshall at TPM has been asking, and he’s done some investigative reporting on it. But you’ll have to search his blog and the Washington Monthly to find his comments. Daily Kos probably has a lot on it too, but again you’ll have to search for it.
Regarding undermining Wilson by exposing Plame: The Bush administration has viewed the CIA as their enemy. Therefore, they set up the Office of Special Plans to bypass the CIA’s Iraq assessments, etc. Wilson and Plame were just the tools they chose to declare war on the CIA and politicize intelligence: “Play by our rules or else!” I guess the only way the Bushies could undermine Wilson’s credibility was to claim that he was a partisan hack and the only reason he got to go to Niger [on a dream vacation, LOL] was because of his wife. It’s laughable. But the corporate media has reported it again and again as fact.
October 19th, 2005 at 2:05 pmto #32:
the smears about Wilson lying and referencing the SSCI are based upon a minority opinion or “additional view” signeed by only three of 18 senators on the SSCI, all GOP senators. even 6 of the other GOP senators reefused to sigh the roberts “additional view”.
it is referred to as the Roberts addendum.
From an appendix to the actual Report, entitled “Additional View†There are nine “Additional Views†sign by from one to six Senators. This one is signed by three Senators.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp-dyn/ articles/ A56501-2004Jul16.html
stephen hayes wrote the NS article. it is chock full of bullshit, missing information, quoted texts taken out of context and plain outright crap.
just one “fer-instance”…..he claims in his introduction that that the CIA thought it “plausible” that iraq was securing/seeking nuke material, but if you go to the SSCI report the term used by CIA is actually “possible.”
see the propaganda at work? it is “possible” that steven hayes is a child molester, but it is hardly akin to saying it is plausible.
thus the propaganda.
October 19th, 2005 at 2:58 pmTP can knock down all the straw men it wants. Here is the reality: (1) No one will be indicted for violating the IIPA; (2) Neither Karl Rove, nor Scooter Libby, nor Dick Cheney will be indicted for any criminal activity; and (3) No report will be issued. Everything else is wishful thinking by the left.
October 19th, 2005 at 3:37 pm#33 thanks Leslie, TPM made good reading. #21 does anyone listen to Pat Buchanan anymore?
#35 - did you say the same thing about Delay? Come on don’t be coy!
October 19th, 2005 at 3:48 pm“1) No one will be indicted for violating the IIPA; ”
Speculative. You’re allowed to speculate all you want, but your ‘authorative’ speculation is humorous at best, and pathetic in reality.
“(2) Neither Karl Rove, nor Scooter Libby, nor Dick Cheney will be indicted for any criminal activity; and ”
Once again speculative, and this doesn’t mean they won’t or shouldn’t pay irrespective. Apparently the Wilson family is considering ‘Paula Jonesing’ them - don’t be so sure that they won’t pay for their criminal behavior…
“(3) No report will be issued. Everything else is wishful thinking by the left.”
Really? You talking to the prosecutor on this? Or did you just pull that pearl of wisdom from your buttcheeks where your boyfriend stored it? Get real - you have no way of knowing this, but the chance that no indictments will be given when Rove was called to testify FOUR TIMES - is not only wishful thinking on your side, but it’s a virtual reality fabricated by loser nerd. Join the real world scarecrow - you got no brain at this point.
October 19th, 2005 at 4:03 pmHere’s another fact to add to your debunking of the claim that Wilson lied. The CIA had already forced them to remove that same claim from a speech in October a few months before they went ahead and used it in the SOTU.
October 19th, 2005 at 4:04 pm26- That is the money question, at least for me: where did the doc’s originate? I think once that question is answered, a lot things start to fall into place. And Ledeen has been mentioned before as a source for them, so that isn’t too surprising.
October 19th, 2005 at 4:21 pmThe Bush Admin is finally… GOING DOWN!!!! Keep up the pressure everyone!!! Let’s bring down these treasonous scumbags!!!!! Let’s remove the cancerous evil that is the Bush Admin from America!!! Do it for your children.
http://members.cox.net/cowicide/
October 19th, 2005 at 4:23 pmBoth sides are liars - rep and dems - its dishonest to even think otherwise, its just a more loud lean against the rep right now, but cant trust any of them,,,their terms are too long for one thing, and the zest for justice is lost after several years of nonsense and dipping int the cookie jar, both sides guilty of longterm politican positions and power!
October 19th, 2005 at 4:23 pmnavyseal,
I’d rather have a dishonest politician who does mostly the right thing, than a dishonest one that does EVERYTHING wrong. Then again, I’m a pragamatist. I applaud your idealism, in the meanwhile we must make REAL WORLD progress to improving the political system. Defeatism such as yours doesn’t further the debate, but it does muddy the waters long enough for the crooks to make out like bandits. In otherwords, your intentions may be noble, but like Iraq, you’re making things worse with your actions and attitudes, not better!
October 19th, 2005 at 7:59 pmThe news keeps getting better and better. And, as others have noted, we’ve yet to unwrap the origins of the forged documents. Won’t that make the outing of Plame seem positively benign in comparison.
I’m starting to feel a little sorry for the Bush apologists on board here….it’s gotta really suck to have to do their job defending this administration. The stench of corruption gets a little stronger everday and, eventually, they’ll have no choice but to accept the reality that they’ve been backing the criminals and traitors who have pun their interests ahead of the common good. The cognitive dissonance must be getting unbearable.
October 19th, 2005 at 9:40 pmI love how these wingnuts continually try to smear any opposition with the “elite” tag. These mudslingers went to the same schools and in many cases were born with the proverbial silver spoon tucked appropriately, yet they still have the nerve to call others elitists. The pot and the kettle must be siamese twins.
October 19th, 2005 at 11:35 pmUnder “CLAIM — JOE WILSON LIED ABOUT EVERYTHING” you need another paragraph:
FACT — Whether or not Joe Wilson lied about anything at all is completely immaterial. The special prosecutor is investigating the circumstances of the leak of Valerie Plame’s identity, not the truth or falsity of Joe Wilson’s claims. Even if every word he’s ever uttered since his birth has been a lie, the fact of the matter remains that leaking the identity of a CIA agent is an act of treason and a felony.
October 20th, 2005 at 6:06 am… And how do the babbling boobs ( aka neocons ) feel about the countless lives put at risk when BushCo. blew the ‘ cover ‘ of the company Plame worked for ? Our agents and allies in the field - don’t their lives matter , neoconnies ? I guess in this adSINastration , a few lives lost aren’t nearly as important as ‘ payback ‘ for questioning ” Dear ( in the headlights ) Leader ” , let alone pointing out the obivious - Bush KNEW his ‘ facts ‘ were FAR from factual ! … ;)
October 20th, 2005 at 10:51 amI agree that all the claims are false, but I also thing that there could be better facts on some of the rebuttals. For example, the claim about LEAKING CLASSIFIED INFORMATION IS NO BIG DEAL, the fact is a quote by GHWB, which is not really a fact, it is more opinion. A better fact would be to point out the US Code that makes it illegal, thus making it a big deal.
October 20th, 2005 at 1:41 pm#1Jay- you SAY you’re sorry but you’re not serious. Us Repugs are heart broken, our world is falling a part and our illusions are being shattered by the superior intellect of lefties who hate hypocrisy and injustice and SUV’s….(damn, I’m using the wrong bait. He’s gonna believe me…..damn it)
October 26th, 2005 at 7:31 pm#10- Call PETA, those cats should never have been in any bag. Further evidence that republi-cons are evil and don’t floss…..
What about this new smear from The Daily Standard:
“…After returning to the United States, the envoy reported to the CIA that the uranium-purchase story was false, the sources said. Among the envoy’s conclusions was that the documents may have been forged because the “dates were wrong and the names were wrong,” the former U.S. government official said.
There is one problem with this: It’s wrong. Wilson lied and lied repeatedly. His central contention–that he had seen documents about the alleged sale and determined that they were forgeries–was a fabrication. We know this because Wilson took his trip in February 2002 and the U.S. government did not receive those documents until October 2002. It could not have happened the way Wilson described it to Pincus.”
Here is the link to the essay: http://news.yahoo.com/ s/ weeklystandard/ 20051027/ cm_weeklystandard/ theincredibles
If this were true, wouldn’t it have been heavily publicized before now? My sense is that the wingnuts are grasping at straws. But stuff like this, no matter how crazy, should be rebutted with facts.
October 27th, 2005 at 5:56 pmWhere is the outrage over the leak of the secret CIA prison’s overseas??? Seems all the liberals got the grizzles over Valerie Plame, but can’t be bothered demanding who leaked the story to the Washington Post.
Typical….
November 15th, 2005 at 10:34 amThe war in Iraq was illegal.. therefore all those supporting it and sending our military there should immediately be arrested, put in cuffs, have their mugshot taken in jail, issued a jumpsuit not a suit like “delay” had on and smiling.. For WAR ATROCITIES to mankind–the killing of innocent people Americans and IraqiS, and therefore must release Hussein as bad as that may be and leave the country..
January 11th, 2006 at 2:36 pm18 Oct 2005
You are chasing the wrong rabbit
Joe Wilson is an egomaniac and his wife is a fraud. I kept notes on the entire incident his wife was not a covert agent period. The following is the truth it is as true now as it was two years ago.
1. Joe Wilson is a liar. He has contradicted himself in public more than once.
The biggie is when he publicly stated that Dick Chaney sent him on a fact finding trip to Niger.
2. Joe Wilson is a grandstanding cowboy that sees himself far more important than he actually is. Check out his shanagins at the American embassy in Iraq just before the first Gulf war.
3. Joe Wilson is a career diplomat, he thinks it is like a Supreme Court justice he thinks he has been appointed for life. The question is by whom. Who is he to undermine the policy set forth by the President of the United States? Back in George Washington’s day his actions would be called treason.
4. Joe Wilson should have had his clearance pulled a long time ago. Because he divulged classified information when he outed the information in his trip report to Niger. If this trip was an official trip sanctioned by the CIA there had to be a written trip report. That trip report and any information therein would have to beâ€classifiedâ€.
5. Joe Wilson is guilty of conflict of interest he has used the taxpayers money to promote his personal political agenda or the political agenda of others not in accordance with the official policy of the US government. He is clearly guilty of defrauding the taxpayer. His trip to Niger and his lame report are nothing but democratic propaganda for the stupid and weak minded. Says a lot for the media in Washington that fell for it hook line and sinker. I had hoped some of you were smarter than that. Besides if this trip was legitimate and something other that an attempt to embarrass the Administration. Then George Tenant was responsible for its content. Joe’s alleged Secret Agent wife is also culpable in this fraud and deceit. The way to correct this fraud is to fire Joe’s wife and take away Joe’s pension for freeloading on taxpayer’s money his entire career.
6. Then bill Terry Mc Califf and the DNC for Joe’s trip and expenses. President Bush finally canned the incompetent George Tennant he just did not do it quickly enough (big mistake).
George Bush may be a Cowboy but sometimes he ain’t too quick on the draw.
Note: The divulging of information to the enemy or the public, that embarrasses the United States during a time of war is an act of treason.
The need for containment of such information is one of the primary reasons for classifying such information Secret. I would think someone in Washington would understand the importance of such data. It seems like media wonks do not understand the meaning of classified information.
It was pretty clear what Joe’s agenda was when he said that he wanted to see Carl Rove shackled and frog marched to jail. Sounds like a real dedicated honorable public servant who represents the utmost in integrity and political detachment.
I live in San Antonio Texas and I knew when Joe got married his wife worked at the CIA.
And was in pretty high in a staff position. I also know she was no covert agent or even a control for covert operations. She was reported to be an analyst. Ha! There are about 35,000 employees in NSA at fort George Meade Maryland and at least 25,000 are analysts. (Better not repeat this it might still be classified.) You too can go to jail.
You can bet good money that any intelligence service in the world worth a spit knows who Valerie Plame is and was a long time ago. If they did not know they don’t matter. She appeared on embassy staff rosters for Christ’s sake. Who are they trying to kid? I guess it works in Washington some of the people there need to breathe some clean air.
It is like the Military Attaché in the Russian embassy in Washington was never a KGB officer.
Now to the real fly in the ointment. Joe reported he went to Niger at the request of the administration and found out there was no basis to the rumor that Sadam was trying to buy more yellow cake. Joe says he had a few cups of mint tea with old friends there and they said that all reports were false. (I don’t trust men that sit around and drink mint tea)
Now as I understand the situation Niger had a political coup in 1999 and has a new dictator. I am curious, is Joe old friends with this new head of state?
90% percent of the total revenue for the government of Niger comes from the sale of Yellowcake. Now are you telling me that ole Joe has access to the mining company’s shipping records? Is the mining company owned by the people of Niger? I think not, the company is French and the only people that know who buys what is the French. And I will bet a thousand dollars that the French intelligence or the mining company did not tell ole Joe shit.
Now ima gonna do some cowboy sepculatin’
I suspect that the paper about the yellowcake was French Intel’s way of telling the British that Sadam was interested in reviving his pursuit of a nuclear bomb. The document may have been a forgery but it served a greater purpose than deceiving the US Government.
I suspect the truth was well known before ole Joe made his trip and is at a much higher classified level than ole Joe has access to.
Sadam did not need more yellowcake in Iraq he had 750 tons of the stuff. Iraq also has its own uranium mines within its own borders. The problem is that he had no way to refine it so why in the hell would he want to buy more? ———unless ????
Hans Blick said he discounted the report from Italy from the start, he did not say that it was false but he knew Sadam could not use it. He also knows that the original 750 tons of the stuff is still there!
The situation is pretty obvious to some redneck out here in Texas. Too bad you liberal gurus cannot see beyond the Beltway.
Who in the Islamic world had the biggest laundered money cash flow in the world?
Sadam Hussein, oil for food right? Who wanted a bomb the most Sadam or the Iranians or the Taliban? Could you buy the technology? Hell yes! But who could get away with it first? Could you buy the weapons grade uranium or plutonium? No! This is the most difficult problem. If North Korea comes on line then it is possible!
There are a handful of countries that can refine uranium: The US, Great Briton, France Russia, South Africa, China and maybe Pakistan and India. So who is buying all of the yellowcake from Niger? France of course and Libya of course. Bye the way Libia is next door to Niger and there is a road across the border (imagine that). Was Kadfy buying yellowcake? Was Kadfy setting up a refining plant? Were the French helping Kadfy? Were the French helping Sadam? Who was supplying Kadfy with his money? We know who his agent was. Why did Kadfy throw in the towel when Sadam went under and he knew the French had been busted by the Bush administration?
The bottom line is that Kadfy was Sadams plan for the yellowcake. And he was paying his fair share. The so called “fake memo†was the French Intel’s way of letting us know what to look for. This was claimed to be the work of the British and they still stand by their info
I’ll bet that the French Intel boys got a good laugh at ole Joe’s op-ed piece. The French have been amazed for years at how inept our CIA seems at times and still marvel at our success rate. It simply defies reason. Our intelligence is compromised by ingrates and mentally challenged because of their elite arrogance like Joe Wilson and some of our liberal politicians.
The CIA is now the largest monolithic bureaucracy in the world, the only one even close is the US State Department but it is less dangerous. Before the fall of the Soviet Union we were second, now were are first. The big difference was the Soviet Union was more corrupt but the KGB was much more effective.
Thank God we still have some functional sections in the lower echelons hard at work. By the way French intelligence is on par with MI-6 and the French soldiers are some of the best in the world. It is the politicians and liberals in France that tarnish their reputation.
You should try to verify what I have said and I think you will find a lot of the truth.
